Love sport and fitness? Why not make it a career.

August 24, 2022

If your favourite part of the day is triggering those feel-good endorphins, you’re not alone. This article is for our fitness freaks, the ones who live for Saturday morning footy (no matter how blisteringly cold it might be), crave a runner’s high, and love being outdoors.

The common rhetoric is that sport and fitness is a hobby for the weekends, but why settle for an office job when you could live out your passion as a career? There’s a bounty of career opportunities in the fitness sector, and even more reasons to get qualified.

      1. You get to ignite the passion in others

There’s one thing better than practicing fitness, and that’s helping others fall in love with it. Training people helps them in more ways than just physical progress, you help them gain confidence, achieve their goals, and improve their mental health. This type of rewarding nature is hard to come across and will help drive your passion.

      2. It keeps you on your toes (literally)

With a career in fitness, you can say goodbye to working at a desk. It gets you up and moving (even working outside if you’re lucky). Studies have shown this to be a critical part of working life because it helps avoid brain fog, stiff muscles, and fatigue. While others are scheduling in time for movement outside of office hours, you’ll be hitting two birds with one stone, promoting blood flow, circulation, and muscle activation.

      3. The hours are flexible

Depending on what profession you dive into, your working hours can be as flexible as you after a yoga class. Working different hours every day helps avoid the redundancy and boredom that often comes with 9-5 life and can start from day one. Getting your degree online means you can stay within region and keep your current lifestyle. That’s right, you won’t have to give up local sport.

      4. You might find a new hobby

People are constantly looking for fun ways to exercise. This has created a range of fitness classes, that you might end up loving. As an instructor, you’ll get to try your hand at pilates, yoga, martial arts or even boxing. Plenty of people sign up to these classes as a fun alternative to cardio and end up going professional.

      5. There are a diverse range of jobs on offer

There are plenty of different pathways you can pursue. If you enjoy the physical nature of the field, being a personal trainer, gym instructor or high-performance coach might be your best bet. Otherwise, being a PE teacher is perfect if you enjoy instructing sport socially (and have a lot of patience). There are also scientific avenues you can explore, such as nutrition, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation.

To best qualify you for a career in sport, study one of the following degrees through TAFE SA, CQUniverisity or Flinders University, SA’s number one in undergraduate sport and leisure:

  1. Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Sciences
  2. Bachelor of Medical Science (Specialisation)
  3. Vocational Education Training – Health & Lifestyle

To jumpstart your career in fitness, get in touch with our Student Advisors. They can help find the right degree for you and support you through the enrolment process. You can reach them here.
