- It’s important when looking at a career to see if there is an opportunity to do work experience or even work in this area if possible. This could involve after school work experience. Don’t wait for your school to organise it, show initiative and do it yourself. Doing this will ensure that you gain an understanding of life in that field before committing to study.
- Explore different Universities and what they have to offer. More students are realising there doesn’t have to be as much sacrifice involved in studying as first thought – they can study in their regional town, have meaningful work associated with their studies and affordably live at home with the family. You can picture how drastically simpler life becomes when you start being smart about study.
- Some online degrees have residential school, which is an excellent opportunity to spend 1 – 2 weeks with other like-minded students with a different learning experience.

Murraylands student advisor Daniel words of wisdom are to:
- Preference the career you actually like and what you want to study, rather than what is the logical choice, or what course/s your family thinks you should take on might be. Make the choice all yours.
- However, do your research. Visit sites like joboutlook.gov.au to find out if the field you like is growing and what it takes to get employed in that field, and whether that is a realistic goal. Or talk to other people in the field to get a real insight on where the industry is at.
- Find out what is required in the course (on-campus attendance/online modules) and travel commitments to consider what will work best for you.
- A low or no ATAR isn’t the end of the world. There are many ways to gain entry into uni and MRSH advisors can help you navigate this
- Finally, speak to MRSH advisors, talking to us is free. We may not have all the answers, but we will research and look into things for you, or at least workshop your options to help you find the solution.
